Powering Progress: Celebrating Energy Awareness Month with Crescent Power Systems

October is Energy Awareness Month, a time recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy to highlight the importance of smart, efficient energy use and to celebrate the innovators driving progress in the power industry. For Crescent Power Systems, energy awareness isn’t just a theme for the month; it’s central to everything we do.

At the Forefront of a Changing Energy Landscape

Crescent Power Systems is proud to stand at the forefront of technology, continually adapting to meet the world’s growing power and infrastructure demands. With every project, CPS supports energy production and distribution efforts that push efficiency, reliability, and safety forward.

“Energy awareness is part of our value add,” says the CPS team. “We’ve seen a lot, so we can identify potential power inefficiencies, where power can be cleaned up, and how it could be used more efficiently.” This hands-on, analytical approach helps clients not only manage today’s energy challenges but also build more resilient systems for the future.

Engineering with Efficiency in Mind

Energy awareness at CPS goes far beyond surface-level energy savings; it’s built into the engineering process itself. The CPS team conducts in-depth power system analyses to evaluate factors like power factor, in-rush current, harmonics, arc- flash, start and run efficiencies, and topology efficiencies across all voltage levels.

During a recent project, after a sizable scope increase, CPS had to analyze plant-wide load flow diagrams across all voltage levels to determine harmonic and power factor content. We then had to properly size active power filters and capacitor VAR compensation. This was an important step in optimizing energy quality and system longevity.

CPS has also developed and implemented Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) across numerous power and distribution projects. These systems require precise modeling of power burden, battery design, and emergency supply integration, illustrating energy awareness in action on a low-voltage level.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

When it comes to energy challenges, CPS has learned that sometimes the biggest obstacles aren’t technical; they’re logistical. “Oddly enough, schedule impacts create some of the biggest electrical issues we see,” the team notes.

Delays in key equipment, such as generators or switchgear, can ripple through an entire project. CPS’s engineering expertise allows them to adapt quickly, whether that means designing capacitor banks to start alternative generators, reconfiguring layouts for different gear, or adjusting transformer designs on the fly. This kind of creative problem solving ensures these energy saving efforts reach maturity in the projected time frame.

Looking Ahead: Innovation and the Future of Energy

Crescent Power Systems is deeply engaged in emerging technologies that will define the next generation of power infrastructure. The team is particularly excited about advancements in nuclear generation, HVDC (high-voltage direct current) systems, GIS (gas-insulated switchgear), increasing our voltage rating on transformers, developing distributed generation, and battery chemistry innovation.

These developments represent new possibilities for cleaner, more efficient, and more reliable power systems. This is exactly the kind of innovation CPS is built to deliver.

Driving Energy Awareness Every Day

As the nation recognizes Energy Awareness Month, Crescent Power Systems continues doing what it does best: delivering smarter, safer, and more efficient power solutions that move industries forward.

For CPS, energy awareness isn’t a one-time initiative. It’s an ongoing commitment to building the future of energy, one project at a time.
